Chaplaincy
The Certificate of Theology is a course that enables every Christian, everywhere to be better equipped to understand the Bible and apply it to life. It is a recognised equivalent to Cert IV training, practical, accessible and flexibly delivered through audio recordings, some reading and participation in online forums.
1. Aspiring school chaplains in 2012
The Expansion phase of the National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program will be looking for numerous chaplains. Before an aspiring Chaplain can start at any school they are required by the Government to complete minimum training. Two of the pathways on offer are:
PATHWAY 1 - VTAB
- Demonstrate to their Funding Recipient that they have completed the Certificate IV in Pastoral Care or Youthwork with the specific core competencies in mental health and referrals.
OR
- Demonstrate to their Funding Recipient that they have completed the Certificate IV level specific competencies in Mental Health and Referrals.
- Enrol in a higher level of relevant study (e.g. Diploma of Theology)
PATHYWAY 2 - Timothy Partnership
We are pleased to be able to offer an option approved by DEEWR and deemed equivalent to the Certificate IV in Youth Work or Pastoral Care. The Certificate in Theology is administered through the Timothy Partnership and awarded by the Australian College of Theology (ACTh). This course offers aspiring Chaplains the opportunity to complete two core competencies in Pastoral Care via distance and satisfy the Government requirements.
The Introduction to Pastoral Care and Advanced Pastoral Care units meet the outcomes expected for the competencies and are
- DEEWR approved
- Certificate IV level equivalent
- Recognized units of a Certificate of Theology, a recognized equivalent
The two units can be done in preparation for potential employment as a chaplain
- By distance
- Around your present work and after hours
- Within a school term

2. Existing school chaplains
At your school, were you funded in 2011 as a chaplain and now have been refunded under the Extension of the National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program? Unless you have a Certificate IV in Youth Work or Pastoral Care containing the specific units in Mental Health and Referrals, your Funding Recipient will require you to complete competencies in mental health and referrals.

The Certificate in Theology is administered through the Timothy Partnership and awarded by the Australian College of Theology (ACTh). This course offers existing Chaplains the opportunity to complete two core competencies in Pastoral Care via distance and thereby satisfy the Government requirements.

- Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations approved
- Certificate IV equivalent
- Recognized units of a Certificate of Theology
The two units can be done
- By distance
- After hours or at your convenience
- While you are a chaplain
- Any time in 2012
Applications are currently being accepted for these units. Students have the option of completing them in intensive mode (units run from June 15 - July 13 OR over the course of a semester (July 23 - Nov 2).
